Hurricane Sandy is just about to hit the east coast – are you prepared?

Hurricane SandyHurricane season is not over yet. Hurricane Sandy is on its way to the East Coast of the U.S. According to the L.A. Times, “it may become the worst to hit the U.S. Northeast in 100 years if current forecasts are correct. Sandy may combine with a second storm coming out of the Midwest to create a system that would rival the New England hurricane of 1938 in intensity, said Paul Kocin, a National Weather Service meteorologist in College Park, Maryland. The hurricane currently passing the Bahamas has killed 21 people across the Caribbean, the Associated Press reported, citing local officials.”

It’s not yet too late. It’s still a good idea to prepare for the worst. Make sure that all of your company’s devices are backed up off site. If they aren’t, it’s time to get to it right away. Once the hurricane hits, it will be too late to back up important data. Besides having it backed up, make sure that all data can be recovered and used. Important information doesn’t do any good if it can’t be used once you’ve recovered it.

Recovering important information is a priority, but so is making sure that everyone knows what to do should the worst happen. If the hurricane takes out your business, will your people know what to do? Will they know how to access the company network? All of these things are important, too.

Establish a routine that teaches people what to do should a hurricane hit while they’re still at their homes. You especially want to establish a routine that addresses safe evacuation should the hurricane be imminent. Make sure that everyone can communicate easily with each other and can communicate with the company’s virtual network.

Hurricanes are no laughing matter. Hurricane Sandy sounds like it could be a monster. Don’t wait any longer to get your business ready to deal with the potential fallout.
