Honor Red Cross Month by Supporting Your Local Chapter

Disaster recovery applies to more than just businesses. Although it’s almost over, you still have time to get involved during Red Cross Month by volunteering with or donating to a Red Cross chapter in your area. Every year since Franklin D. Roosevelt declared March Red Cross Month in 1943, the sitting president, including President Obama, has done the same. Roosevelt’s declaration was made to support fundraising efforts by the Red Cross in response to the needs created by World War II. Today, there are a number of needs to be fulfilled, such as disaster relief and blood donations among others.

The Red Cross does more than help people recover after natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina or the earthquake in Haiti. It also helps people locally with everyday problems. For example, when a young married couple in Florida was struggling to pay their bills and had their electricity cut off, because the wife was pregnant with the couple’s first child, the Red Cross gave the couple enough money to get their electricity restored. The Red Cross also offers classes in first-aid, CPR, disaster preparedness and water safety and runs regular blood drives. Community involvement is clearly high on the organization’s priority list.

Whether as an individual or through your business, supporting the Red Cross in your area, either as a donor or as a volunteer, is a good idea. Luis Alvarez, founder of Alvarez Technology Group, for example, is the chairman of the board of the Red Cross in his region, and he encourages everyone, both young and old, to get involved with the Red Cross chapters in their communities.

“We have to get the word out that we do a lot right here in our own communities,” said Alvarez in an interview with The Californian.

Even though you may live in a place that’s never been touched by disaster, one of your employees, colleagues or friends may live in a place that has. So, the next the time you’re contemplating the disaster recovery plan you’ve established for your business, why not also consider what you can do to assist the Red Cross in its efforts to help local residents recover from the disasters that have touched their lives?
