In the United States, Independence Day, aka the 4th of July, is a national holiday on which people throughout the U.S. commemorate the ratifying of the Declaration of Independence on Jul. 4, 1776. The document, which was drafted by Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Robert R. Livingston and Roger Sherman, officially separated the original 13 colonies from British rule and established the U.S. as an independent nation.

The second sentence of the Declaration of Independence is one of “the best-known sentences in the English language,” according to Wikipedia, and serves as the standard that all U.S. citizens should strive to uphold. The sentence reads:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Three presidents have died on Jul. 4. Thomas Jefferson and John Adams both died on Jul. 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence’s ratification, and James Monroe, who died on Jul. 4, 1831. Only one president, Calvin Coolidge, has ever had Independence Day as a birthday. Coolidge came into the world on Jul. 4, 1872.

Independence Day wasn’t always an official holiday. That happened in 1870 when Congress declared Independence Day as an unpaid holiday for federal employees. Then, in 1938, Congress changed it to a paid federal holiday.

Today, most U.S. citizens have Independence Day off – paid, of course — to celebrate with barbecues, picnics, parades, special events and concerts. Throughout the nation, the day ends with spectacular fireworks displays that take place around 10 o’clock at night.

Independence Day is also a day when most U.S. citizens feel patriotic, hanging U.S. flags in front of their homes, wearing clothing with pictures of the U.S. flag or carrying around small replicas of it. It’s a day when most can forget about all the problems the country is having and just feel proud to live in a nation that offers its citizens an abundance of freedom and opportunity.
